Garlin Gilchrist highlighted the AAPI community as a thriving and fast-growing demographic in Michigan, the fastest growing racial or ethnic group in the state. He expressed pride in the many AAPI individuals who have chosen to build their families and futures in Michigan, leading to deep cultural impacts and contributing hundreds of millions of dollars in economic impact annually. At the gala, he expressed gratitude on behalf of Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the state of Michigan, emphasizing support for the AAPI community and the desire to see it thrive for generations.
Gilchrist hopes that members of the AAPI community feel empowered, safe, and able to pursue their dreams in Michigan. He encourages people to start businesses, attend school, and build their families and futures in the state, as these actions contribute to making Michigan a better place.
Regarding recent anti-Asian sentiment, Gilchrist stated that Michigan unequivocally rejects racism and anti-Asian sentiment. The state works with communities to ensure that people feel safe and know they can reach out to law enforcement or the Michigan Department of Civil Rights for help or support.
