On a special evening in Michigan, the 21st Annual APACC Gala unfolded with much anticipation, marking the first in-person gathering in over two years. The event was dedicated to celebrating the unity and heritage of the Asian Pacific American (AAPI) community.
Charley Meng, Chair of APACC, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, emphasizing its significance. “This event means a lot to us,” he noted, “We’ve taken significant steps to ensure its safety, thanks to the support of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.”
The gala was graced by numerous prominent figures, including Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist and Senator Debbie Stabenow. Also in attendance were Oakland County Executive Dave Coulter and GM International President Shilpan Amin, showcasing broad support for the AAPI community.
Charley Meng highlighted that the Asian Pacific American community is one of the fastest-growing in both the nation and Michigan. To ensure their voices are heard and foster successful collaborations with other entities and companies, it is crucial to unite and speak with one voice. This not only amplifies their influence but also serves as a platform for other organizations and communities to engage.
With the backdrop of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Charley took the opportunity to honor the late Secretary Norman Mineta, the first Asian American cabinet member, who significantly contributed to the recognition of Asian Pacific Americans and the establishment of AAPI Heritage Month. “Though it’s just one month, it’s an opportunity to honor Asian Americans and support Asian American businesses, but we need to make this a year-round effort.”
The gala was more than just a celebration; it was a reaffirmation of commitment to the AAPI community, a reminder that every month should embody the spirit of Asian American Heritage Month.
